Chargers stumble against RMA 9-7

The fourth annual Golden Leaf Invitational continued to be an agonizing affair for the Wilson Christian Academy varsity baseball team on its diamond Monday afternoon.

Leading 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Chargers of the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A ranks allowed eight runs and suffered a 9-7 loss to Rocky Mount Academy of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A division.

The second tough Golden Leaf loss dropped WCA to 5-10 going into Tuesday afternoon’s final test against Hunt High of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A Big East Conference.

WCA head coach Ty Bissett noted his team had a legitimate shot at being 2-0 coming into the Hunt game and lamented: “ Right now, our team could mess up a one-car funeral between Wilson and Elm City.”

Only one of Rocky Mount Academy’s eight runs was earned in the sixth. RMA parlayed three WCA errors, three walks and three hits into the eight runs.

But the Chargers fought back in the final inning. Jonathan Denton and Kennedy Herndon each singled. With two outs, Brice Murray and Kevin Teague each rapped run-scoring singles to cut the deficit to 9-7. With base runners at first and third, the Chargers’ threat died with Max Holland’s roller toward first base.

“We had 13 hits and didn’t win the game,” Bissett noted.

RMA managed six hits and, through five innings against Chargers senior left-hander Will Whitley, managed only a solo home run from Reid Johnston. Whitley allowed four hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks while striking out three. Whitley was relieved by senior Austin Holland after RMA’s first two batters in the sixth reached on errors. Austin Holland suffered the loss.

Murray, a sophomore, and junior Preston Skinner each batted 3 for 4 for the Chargers. Seniors Kevin Teague and Austin Holland each had two hits. Holland doubled and drove in two runs.

Johnston powered RMA, going 3 for 3 with the homer and three RBIs. Paul King went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs.
