Knights clip Halifax; win streak at seven
The Greenfield School varsity baseball team, No. 1-ranked among North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A teams, and senior outfielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton continued their respective streaks in the team’s 13-3 non-conference conquest of Halifax Academy in Fleming Stadium on Monday evening.
The Knights of head coach Daniel Johnson stretched their winning streak to seven games and now stand 14-3. Williams-Sutton, who has signed with East Carolina University, hit safely in his school-record 38th straight game when he doubled off the left-field wall in the second inning.
The mercy rule halted the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leading 12-3, the Knights upped their lead to the required 10 runs when senior Isaiah White, also an ECU signee, walked, stole second and third bases and continued home when the catcher’s throw sailed past third base.
Greenfield snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in each of the second and third innings. In the second, Williams-Sutton drilled a two-run double and White added a run-scoring single. In the third, White doubled in two runs and junior Luke Taylor singled in another.
Luke Taylor and Cedric Kirby each batted 3 for 3, while White, Jake Taylor and Jeff Hagen, who has signed with North Carolina Central University, each rapped two hits. Jake Taylor, Kirby and Hagen each drove in two runs.
On the mound, right-hander Jake Taylor limited Halifax to a pair of hits and withstood five errors. Taylor notched his sixth win without a loss and all three runs were unearned. Greenfield’s pitcher issued one walk and did not strike out a batter.
Greenfield concludes Coastal Plain Independents Conference play in Fleming Stadium at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Fayetteville’s Freedom Christian, the reigning 2-A champion.
