Late deflection foils Chargers at Liberty
DURHAM — The Wilson Christian varsity boys soccer team officially has its wake-up call.
Already in possession of the No. 1 seed from the East for the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A playoffs, the Chargers were handed their sole loss in conference play Monday night, as a late deflection in the 77th minute eluded junior backup goalkeeper Josh Vanderpool and sent WCA to a 2-1 loss.
At 10-4 overall and 7-1 against conference opposition, the Chargers will now await their assignment for the quarterfinal round at home Saturday against an opponent to be determined. Head coach Don Samson expects it to be either Ramseur Faith Christian or Greensboro Vandalia Christian.
WCA generated more quality opportunities than the Patriots (10-2), getting eight shots on frame compared to three for the hosts.
“We outplayed Liberty for most of the game,” Samson said. “We had more quality chances, but if you don’t close the lid, anything can happen.”
The Chargers claimed a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute on junior William Provo’s goal that was set up by a long throw-in by senior Spencer Parker. But the Patriots finished a breakaway in the 70th minute against starting WCA keeper Turner Provo to equalize.
Roughly two minutes later, Provo, who had the Chargers only save, was injured and had to leave the field. Vanderpool entered and oversaw the deflection into his net.
While Samson credited the effort of junior Nathan Murray in the midfield, he did not leave satisfied with the units performance as a whole.
And as he noted, the Chargers are certainly out of mulligans.
“We’ve already reminded them,” he said.
