Wilmington ousts Chargers 78-54
WILMINGTON - Host Wilmington Christian's torrid start to Friday night's North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A boys basketball playoff clash was too much for Wilson Christian to overcome as the Chargers saw their season come to an end with a 78-54 loss.
The Patriots, No. 1 seed from the East Region District 4, charged to a 15-4 lead after one quarter and went into halftime comfortably ahead 39-15.
"We wanted to slow the game down and limit their offensive touches. We were patient in the first quarter but they had a lot of fast breaks," said Wilson Christian assistant coach Joel Small, who was filling in for absent head coach Joel Attoe.
Small said Wilmington Christian's first-half shooting was close to 70-percent accuracy.
"They were on fire," he said.
Jonah Attoe, the nephew of the Chargers head coach, led the Patriots with 25 points while Austin Tart bombed in four 3-pointers on his way to 15 points.
The Chargers, the No. 4 seed from East District 3, were led by senior Darius Coleman's 23 points while junior Landon Boykin had 17 points and classmate Jared Burrell added 10 points. Coleman also snared nine rebounds.
Wilson Christian careers ended for Coleman, Cameron Spinella, Alfonso Iler, Tripp Bissett and Morgan Truesdale as the Chargers (8-19) suffered their seventh straight loss.
"They battled and didn't quit," Small said. "They played them even in the second half and we were proud of them for that, but they just couldn't get out of that hole from the first half."
