Fayetteville once again dominated the NCISAA 1-A division, bringing home both the girls’ and boys’ basketball titles from Saturday’s state finals at Winston- Salem Forsyth Country Day.
The top-seeded Northwood Temple girls (22-5) beat Neuse Christian 70-57, claiming the program’s third title in five years.
The win is redemptive for the Eagles, who exited the 2017 playoffs in the semifinal round.
“They wanted it bad,” coach Donald Moore said. “From day one in strength and conditioning, they came up with their motto of ring chasing. They faced some resistance, and they came through it.”
The Eagles took control of the game in the third quarter behind a push from guard Ciara Moore, who scored nine of her gamehigh 26 points in the frame to lift give Northwood a 45-40 lead going into the decisive quarter.
With the lead in hand, Northwood went to work at the foul line in the fourth quarter, pulling away with 20 points scored from the stripe in the final eight minutes.
Point guard Kendal Moore, a N.C. State recruit, went 15-for-16 on free throws in the fourth quarter. She finished the night with 19 points.
The Moore cousins and Arielle Wilson earned all-state honors.
