RMA, FCS earn multiple all-state honors

Rocky Mount Academy and Faith Christian School placed a total of 23 student-athletes combined on the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) All-State teams for the 2021-22 season.

The Eagles had 19 student-athletes named all-state (which included one athlete getting the honor twice), while the Patriots had four.

RMA

BASEBALL
Kameron Wright: He batted .483 (28-for-58) with 30 runs scored, eight home runs, 31 RBI, two doubles, four triples, 18 walks and 21 stolen bases. He had a .944 fielding percentage with only four errors out of 72 total chances (53 putouts, 15 assists)

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Mackenzie Davis: She was first on the team in scoring with a 12.1 points per game average. She amassed 267 points, which included 119 field goals, two 3-pointers and 27 free throws, and averaged 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Isabella Daza: She finished seventh in the state meet with a time of 20:04.1.
Essie Chaffin: She finished fourth in the state meet with a time of 19:51.4.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Gabe Winham: He finished sixth in the state meet with a time of 17:55.6.

8-MAN FOOTBALL
Marti McKnight: He finished with 628 yards and nine touchdowns on 73 carries, added 13 receptions for 372 yards and seven TD, made 42 tackles and recorded one sack, one interception and two fumble recoveries.
Isaac Lewis: He finished with 789 yards rushing and five TDs on 116 carries, caught seven passes for 152 yards and two TDs, made 42 tackles on defense and added two sacks, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions.

GIRLS SOCCER
Hannah Achilles: One of the top defenders for the Eagles, she also scored seven goals and had seven assists.
Isabella Daza: She tallied 27 goals and 67 assists for a total of 116 points.
Rachel Godwin: She led the team in scoring with 61 goals and added 26 assists for 148 total points.

GIRLS TENNIS
Shelton Honey: She went 9-7 in singles and 13-7 in doubles this past season for the Eagles.

BOYS TENNIS
Brody Brice: He went 13-4 at No. 1 singles and 15-3 at No. 1 doubles with partner Darshan Patel in leading RMA to a second straight state 2A championship.
Darshan Patel: He went 13-3 at No. 1 singles and 15-3 at No. 1 doubles (with Brody Brice) in helping the Eagles win consecutive state 2A titles.

SOFTBALL
Berkeley Miller: She batted .423 (33-for-78) with 13 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples, a home run and 24 RBI. She had a .921 fielding percentage (three errors in 38 total chances). On the mound, she pitched 102 innings and allowed 83 hits and 44 earned runs (3.02 ERA) while striking out 144 and walking 50.
Landry Miller: She batted .488 (39-for-80) with 29 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, a home run and 20 RBI. She had a .908 fielding percentage (six errors in 65 total chances). On the mound, she worked 18.2 innings and allowed 24 hits and 14 earned runs (5.25 ERA) with 24 strikeouts and nine walks.
Katie Bullock: She batted .364 (28-for-77) with 25 runs scored, seven doubles, 16 walks and 14 RBI.

BOYS GOLF
Will Tharin: He finished among the top nine golfers during the state 2A meet.


VOLLEYBALL
Mary Hanna Bryant: She was one of the top players on the Eagles team this past season. She led the Carolina Independent Conference in kills and blocks and was the league’s player of the year while playing on the front row and other positions on the floor.
TRACK & FIELD
Audrey Roeder: She captured the NCISAA Division III girls state high jump title (4 feet, 10 inches) at Mount Olive on May 20.



FAITH CHRISTIAN

FOOTBALL
DeAnthony Joyner: Rushed for 1,126 yards and 13 touchdowns on 95 carries, averaging 11.9 pards per play. Caught eight passes for 143 yards and four TD. Recorded 13 tackles on defense with an interception.

SOFTBALL
Emma Cate Griffin: Batted .316 (18-for-57) with 16 runs scored, five doubles, two triples, three home runs and 17 RBI. She had a .912 fielding percentage (three errors in 34 total chances). On the mound, she worked 109 innings and allowed 133 hits and 71 earned runs (4.56) with 125 strikeouts and 70 walks.
Olivia Bowling: She batted .500 (25-for-50) with 12 runs scored, a double, four triples, four home runs and 17 RBI. She had a .993 fielding percentage (one error in 146 total chances).

TENNIS
Olivia Pannell: She went 6-2 in singles vs 2A competition and was the No. 1-ranked 2A player in the Carolina Independent Conference. She split with RMA’s top singles player, Shelton Honey.


WELLS FARGO CUP

Eagles finish fifth

The Rocky Mount Academy athletic program finished fifth in the state overall in the final Wells Fargo Cup standings for 2021-22.

The Eagles ended up with 305 total points for the year, trailing Gaston Day (395), The O’Neal School (392.5), Davidson Day (360) and Caldwell Academy (317).

RMA earned 170 of those points in the spring with Carolina Independent Conference titles in boys tennis, girls soccer and baseball. The Eagles had 112.5 points through the fall season and 22.5 through the winter season.

Faith Christian School finished 25th overall with 37.5 points, 22.5 of which came in the spring season.

The Wells Fargo Cup, presented and sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., recognizes overall excellence in high school athletics among NCISAA member institutions.

Since 1985, the Wells Fargo Cup has been presented to the schools in each classification with the best overall interscholastic athletic programs.

The Wells Fargo Cup is awarded to the school with the most combined points for each classification. The winning schools receive an engraved silver cup and a banner.

The winning schools are determined by point totals earned through competition in State Championships.

Each school that finishes in the top eight of a State Championship tournament receives Wells Fargo Cup points. This is applicable for sports who compete by division as well as classification.
