WCA turned back 40-37 by RMA
The combination of poor shooting and defensive lapses in the fourth quarter proved insurmountable for a Wilson Christian Academy varsity girls basketball team that dropped a 40-37 decision to visiting Rocky Mount Academy of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A ranks Monday night.
The final-quarter woes negated a third-period charge that rallied the Lady Chargers from a 20-18 halftime deficit to a 33-28 advantage going into the final quarter.
With less than a minute remaining, WCA trailed 38-37, needed possession and was attempting to foul the Lady Eagles. However, a Rocky Mount player escaped a double-team with a pass to a wide-open Mackenzie Davis. Davis missed the layup but scored on a putback.
Trailing by the final margin, the Lady Chargers of head coach Brian Trull got a time-out with 12 seconds remaining. Senior guard Ashley Hartsfield got a good look from 3-point range but, at the buzzer, her shot didn’t fall.
Trull said poor shooting has been a season-long malady for a Wilson Christian team of the North Carolina Christian Athletic Association 2-A ranks that dropped to 5-3.
Against Rocky Mount, the Lady Chargers connected on just 15-of-55 attempts for 27-% accuracy. WCA was a paltry 8 of 34 from inside the 3-point arc.
Davis tossed in 12 points for Rocky Mount and was complemented by four teammates with six points.
Sophia Nesbit, a 5-foot-11 freshman, bucketed a season-high 11 points for the Lady Chargers and claimed six rebounds. Hartsfield also scored 11 points. Senior Olivia Vick managed five rebounds and five assists.
