Lamm shuts down Northwood Temple in Lady Cyclones' 13-0 league romp

When the Community Christian School softball team walked off its diamond Friday afternoon with a 13-0 victory against North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A Carolina Christian Conference victory against Northwood Temple of Fayetteville, more of those in attendance than not did not realize a no-hit pitching performance had just occurred.
Count senior right-hander Addison Lamm, who tossed the hitless gem, among those not aware of the feat. She learned of her accomplishment after the game concluded.
"I feel good about it,” Lamm assured, "but I didn’t know that happened. I was in my zone — concentrating on what I was doing.”
Lamm, in a five-inning stint, allowed just two base runners in pitching the Lady Cyclones to their second conference win without a loss. CCS improved to 3-6 overall, while Northwood departed 0-3 and 0-5, respectively.
CCS head coach Ronnie Wells said the no-hitter was the program’s first since being resumed three years ago.
"It’s the lack of a lot of confidence with her if she walks one or two,” Wells noted. "Today, she started out good. She saw (the Northwood Temple) girls couldn’t catch up with her fastball. It’s all about confidence with Addison. She’s a lot better than she thinks she is.”
Lamm not only tossed a no-no but flirted with a perfect game. She retired the first 10 Lady Eagles hitters before second baseman Lauren Collins reached on the shortstop’s error. With two outs, catcher Carmen Versoza drew a walk.
Lamm (3-4) then retired the last four Northwood hitters, striking out the side in the fifth when the game ended via the mercy rule. Lamm wound up with 10 strikeouts, including seven in a row in the first, second and third innings.
"I just threw straight fastballs,” Lamm revealed.
Her no-hitter was preserved when eighth-grade second baseman Gracie Taylor back-pedaled, jumped and gloved shortstop Holly Nanney’s fly ball for the final out in the fourth inning.
Lamm bounced back from a rough outing the previous afternoon in Tarboro where the Lady Cyclones lost 13-12 to North East Carolina Prep.
"I was praying today would be a better day,” she commented, "and I had written a verse (Phillippians 4:13) on my hand to help me get through.”
CCS managed but three hits against Northwood right-hander Bailey Warren. However, the Lady Eagles were generous with nine walks, 10 errors and too many passed balls and wild pitches to count.
After a calm first inning, the Lady Cyclones struck for six runs in the second and seven in the third. Lamm accounted for two of the hits and drove in three runs. Taylor banged out the other hit.
Sophomore first baseman Sarah Pierce, junior shortstop Kirsten Pierce, Taylor, eighth-grade catcher Taylor Hall and junior left fielder Shelby Nix each scored twice. CCS drew four consecutive walks in the third inning.
"We got about what we expected from (Northwood Temple),” Wells reviewed. "We didn’t know about their hitting and we didn’t know how much their pitcher had improved. We knew she struggled last year.”
