Page, Wesleyan evenly matched in Showcase

BROWNS SUMMIT _When two of the top highschool soccer programs inthe state meet, you can expecta game like Page and Wesleyan Christian Academy played Saturday nigh tin MacPherson Stadium atBryan Park.
Page and the threetime state independent school champion Wesleyan played to a 4-4 draw in the Greensboro United High School Soccer Showcase. Page’s Diem Fnu scored three goals and assisted on another, while Wesleyan’s Evan Allred scored two for the Trojans in an exciting end-to-end affair.
“It was a great showcase for high school soccer,” Wesleyan coach Scott Reitnour said. “It gave us a good test against a good team early in the season.” The Pirates, playing their first game, learned a lot about themselves as a team, as well.
“It showed we are ready,” Page coach Ramine Ettefagh said. “We hung in there with one of the best teams in the state. Wesleyan is a good team, well-coached. We took their punches and kept coming back. I am very proud of our boys.”
Wesleyan applied most of the pressure early. But in the 17th minute, Jonathan Bautista took a pass from Fnu and found the net to give Page the lead. Wesleyan tied it with under 11 minutes left in the half on Malik Ibrahim’s
header. Junior Evan Allred made it 2-1 Trojans by beating Page keeper Jack Maginnes with 1:50 left in the half. A minute later, though, Page tied it 2-2 when Fnu scored with an assist from Tyler Cook.
Nineteen seconds before halftime, Cook was issued a red card for a reckless tackle that injured Brahim’s ankle, and
the Pirates were forced to play the second half a man short. Playing a man down did not stop Fnu, though. The speedy Pirate forward, scored his second of the game with five minutes gone in the second half. In the fi rst game of the Showcase,
Northwest Guilford defeated Greensboro Day 3-0 in a lightning shortened contest. Caldwell and Grimsley
played to a 1-1 draw in the second contest.
