Cary Academy routs Franklin Academy in girls’ soccer unbeaten battle

CARY

Sometimes two girls’ soccer teams can walk off the pitch after a lopsided game and both feel good about how the day’s events went.

Though finding reasons to wear a smile and hold heads high was easy for N&O No. 7 Cary Academy, which blanked Franklin Academy 7-0 in a matchup of undefeated teams, the Patriots had something to be proud of.

All seven goals by the Chargers (8-0), the Triangle’s top private school team, came during the first half. Freshman Lyndon Wood showed deft touch in the midfield and got the ball wide to North Carolina recruit Abby Staker, Duke recruit Remi Swartz and Jessica McCoppin.

The rest was easy for a team hoping to win the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A title after falling in the semifinals last year.

“I wanted everyone to play, and it was important that the first team get quality minutes still,” Cary Academy coach Jeff Costa said. “They were playing the right way. It wasn’t just ‘I’m going to get mine and turn and dribble past everybody.’ We were still moving the ball.”

Franklin Academy (10-1), the Triangle’s top charter school team, held its own during the second half. Coach Kambyl Borries was excited to play a team with considerable skill, even if it cost the Patriots an undefeated record.

“I could see my girls were really able to take what they did wrong in the first half and improve upon it, and I couldn’t be more proud of them for that,” Borries said. “I’m really excited that they were able to keep up, especially in the second half when they’re already tired.”

They said it

“Congratulations, you got to see (Marlayna Frutiger) play today.” – Borries to her team, a hat tip of how active her goalkeeper had to be in comparison to the first 10 games.

Three to know

Remi Swartz, Cary Academy: Junior had two assists and sped by defenders with ease.

Jessica McCoppin, Cary Academy: One of two Chargers with a first-half hat trick.

Abby Staker, Cary Academy: Senior had three goals in the first half, then she moved to goalkeeper to give a banged-up Aiden Lefebvre a break.

By the numbers

1: Assist each for Carly Lupton-Smith and Charlotte Waechter.

3: Saves by Staker in the final 10 minutes as Franklin Academy pushed hard for a goal.

5: Goals Franklin Academy had allowed going into the contest.

6: Goals Cary Academy has allowed this season.
