Chargers open season with shutout of Village Christian
From staff reports
FAYETTEVILLE — An early start to the 2015 season did not faze the Wilson Christian varsity boys soccer team Friday night.
Facing an opening road assignment at Fayetteville Village Christian, the Chargers got an early goal from junior Andrew Hartsfield, and a stingy Wilson Christian defense helped limit opportunities in a 3-0 win.
Wilson Christian of the North Carolina Christian Schools Association 2-A ranks led 1-0 at the half on Hartsfield’s goal that was assisted by junior Shae Gossett.
Freshman Zach Hunter made it 2-0 in the 45th on Denning Hudson’s feed, and senior Carlos Peru found Gossett for a third tally in the 78th.
Senior keeper Adam Varnell had six saves as the Charger defense permitted nine shots.
“We still haven’t gotten our full team together yet,” Wilson Christian head coach Don Samson said. “A lot of work we’ve seen is very positive. Defensively, we were lights out. They had nine shots. Most of them were pretty weak where they played right into what we were looking for them to do.”
WCA’s defense was led in the middle by junior Kevin Teague and sophomore Ethan Fatzaun.
Village Christian competes as a North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A independent.
The Chargers face Alamance Christian on Monday in their home opener.
