Errors plague Lady Chargers in loss
GOLDSBORO — The Wilson Christian softball team built an early four-run lead in Monday’s nonconference game at Wayne Christian, but five errors and seven unearned runs proved to be the undoing of the Lady Chargers in a 12-6 loss at Wayne Christian.
WCA (4-5) of the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A ranks constructed a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the second. However, the Lady Eagles (6-3) a 2-A member of the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 1-A/2-A Coastal Plains Conference, scored in every inning but the sixth.
Wayne Christian took control from a 5-4 deficit with four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Wilson Christian was outhit 13-7, with senior McKenna Griffin having a double and driving in three runs. Holland Miller also doubled and Faith Bridgers added an additional RBI.
Jennifer Edmondson took the loss for Wilson Christian, allowing eight hits over five innings of work. She struck out four and walked two, but only two of her eight runs were earned before giving way to Griffin for the sixth.
Brianna Verme won in relief for Wayne Christian, allowing two hits over the final four innings. Eleven Wilson Christian batters struck out against Verme and walked once.
The Lady Chargers return home Friday for a doubleheader on Senior Night against Lexington Union Grove.
