After dropping the first two sets, the Buccaneers picked up their play to improve to 2-0 on the season

Things looked bleak for the Laney volleyball team Thursday evening.
The Buccaneers dropped the first two sets to host Coastal Christian without much of a fight, and they trailed 17-13 in the third. Momentum quickly changed.
Sarah Shropshire put down a kill and served an ace on consecutive points to end the third set, and Laney continued its solid play to finish of an improbable 16-25, 11-25, 25-23, 25-20, 17-15 comeback victory.
“I knew coming up here it was going to be a battle,” Laney coach Seneca Redwood-Sawyerr said. “I told them that before the game started and they fought. It was a good win.”
Senior Anna Morgan led the Buccaneers with 12 kills, including one to save a match point with Laney (2-0) trailing 14-13 in the deciding set. A pair of hitting errors from Coastal Christian sealed the victory, but it didn’t overshadow how much better the Buccaneers played down the stretch.
“We needed to pick up our energy. Our JV girls really helped us because we were all down after losing two sets like that,” Morgan said. “We focused on our passing and that started it all.”
Coastal Christian got an impressive showing from setter Anna Grace Holdford. The Campbell commit finished with 41 assists to go along with six digs, five kills, two blocks and two aces. She directed the offense to near-perfection in the opening two sets, but errors started piling up and eventually caught up to the Centurions (4-3).
“I think Laney played better as the game went on, but we also made a lot more errors in the last three sets,” Coastal Christian coach Dudley Raye said.
In the final set, the Centurions built a 7-3 lead on a kill from Anna Dudley Wetherill. Laney came back to tie the score at 8-all and the teams continued to trade points.
Back-to-back overpass kills from Sam Stanko and Carson Fuller gave Coastal Christian a 14-12 lead, but a service error and Shropshire’s kill once again knotted the score. Laney finally capitalized on their second match point, when Stanko’s attempted kill went into the net.
Shropshire had nine kills and sophomore setter Kaylie McRostie dished out 26 assists for the Buccaneers.
Freshman Bailey Teter led the Centurions with 12 kills. Stanko added 10 kills and 20 digs, while Fuller finished with eight kills and 10 blocks.
