McNair’s presence too much for Wayne Country Day
The Greenfield School varsity girls soccer team has Serenity McNair. Arch rival Wayne Country Day doesn’t.
That contrast created a vast gulf between the sides Thursday night, as McNair lit into the Chargers with the first five goals of the match on the way to an easy 7-1 victory on Forbes Field.
Greenfield ended the regular season with a 16-2 record and a perfect 8-0 showing in the 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference.
The match was scoreless through 23 minutes when McNair, a freshman, began her reign of terror. She put in an assist from Kat Stanley before Juliette Suarez-Robles provided the help in the 36th minute.
Less than a minute later, Libby Eagles assisted McNair before the Lady Knights took a 4-0 halftime lead on the strength of Avery Williams’ feed to McNair.
That duo reprised itself in the 44th minute to make it 5-0 Greenfield.
The Lady Knights grabbed a 7-0 lead once Suarez-Robles found Stanley in the 47th and Williams netted her third assist by getting it to eighth grader Darcy Dean in the 49th.
Wayne Country Day (7-7, 6-2 CPIC) averted the shutout by knocking in a penalty kick in the 70th minute.
Greenfield outshot the Chargers 28-3.
“All we can say is...Serenity McNair,” Greenfield head coach Randol Mendoza summarized.
The Lady Knights will now await their postseason path when the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 1-A seeding committee convenes Sunday. Greenfield is expected to be a strong contender for the No. 1 seed line.
