Knights, Lady Chargers battle to 1-1 draw
Greenfield and Wilson Christian, two varsity girls soccer teams who finished the 2021 season as champions of their respective state associations, entered the 2022 season with decidedly different lineups and expectations.
The Knights and Lady Chargers met Friday on Greenfield’s Forbes Field with a 1-1 draw the result.
“We both lost a lot of scoring that’s hard to replace and we’re teaching a lot of girls how to play soccer on our end for sure,” said WCA veteran head coach Don Samson, whose team dropped to 0-2-1.
The Lady Chargers lost five seniors from the 2021 team that went 13-1-1 in winning Wilson Christian’s second NCSSA 2-A title under Samson. That group of graduates included starters Lindsey Hunter and Lea Norville, their top scorer and now a freshman on the NCAA Division II Gardner-Webb University team.
Greenfield (1-2-2), which won its eighth NCISAA 1-A crown last May, lost several players to graduation but also is without top scorers Serenity McNair, who is focusing on basketball this spring, and Kat Stanley, who transferred to Pope John Paul II Catholic High in Greenville.
Friday’s game was scoreless until the 57th minute when a misdirected goal kick by the Lady Chargers was pounced by Knights freshman Darcy Dean, who sent it back into the net.
The Chargers finally got the equalizer in the 75th minute when Melanie Raper, an eighth grader, finished a pass from senior Peyton Norville. Per WCA’s stats, Greenfield had seven shots on goal while the Lady Chargers finished with three. Kate Hoskins came up with six saves for Wilson Christian while Jeallen Holland made two for the Knights.
“For us, third game, I’m just seeing a lot of growth right now and that’s what I’m really pleased with,” said Samson.
Wilson Christian will kick off NCCSA 2-A East Region play Monday at home against Wilmington Christian while Greenfield is off until it visits the Lady Chargers on Monday, March 28.
