Knights falter against Chargers

The Greenfield dropped its final game of the regular season in a 1-0 decision to 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independent Conference opponent Wayne Country Day on Thursday night.

Head coach Eric Nguyen said the Knights (14-3-2, 4-2) had the advantage in the first half, and “created a few dangerous chances but never put the game away.” At halftime, the game was scoreless.

The second half was a battle between the two teams won by the Chargers (14-0, 6-0) in the 72nd minute. After a handball was called on Greenfield in the box, a penalty kick was tucked into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Greenfield led in shots by a 12-10 margin, but could not find a way to take the lead or take the game late.

While the offense searched for a score that never came, goalkeeper Frankie Peele kept things close with six saves, including several that were redirected by his finger tips.

With the regular season over, Greenfield awaits seeding for the 1-A North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs, which will be released on Sunday.
