CCS denied title by Cape Fear, 14-10

ERWIN — With the 1-A Carolina Christian Conference championship at stake, the visiting Community Christian School softball team was dealt a 14-10 loss by Cape Fear Christian, the 2015 North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champion.

Cape Fear seized the CCC title with a 3-0 mark. The Lady Cyclones wound up 2-1 in the league and stand 4-7 overall. Community Christian welcomes Halifax Academy at 4 p.m. Monday and observes Senior Day on Tuesday against New Life.

The score was knotted 9-9 when Cape Fear erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Winning pitcher Karissa Cumbie then blanked the Lady Cyclones the next two innings. The seventh inning was not played because of darkness.

Sarah Pierce triggered the CCS offense, going 4 for 5 with three RBIs. Taylor Hall, Emily Boyette and losing pitcher Addison Lamm each collected two hits. Kirsten Pierce drove in two runs.

For Cape Fear, Hannah Tripp slugged a home run in a 3-for-3 performance and drove in four runs. Kristen Bass and Ansler McLamb each went 3 for 4. Bass had four RBIs.
