Greenfield bows to Lawrence 6-3
The Greenfield School girls tennis team put up a reasonable fight in most of its matches Thursday afternoon, but the Lady Knights absorbed a 6-3 non-conference loss to Lawrence Academy at Barton Tennis Complex.
Greenfield (1-3) of the 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference won one doubles match to start play at No. 1 when Avery Vester-Avery Rose Brown defeated Chloe Walston-Beatrice Mordecai 8-5. At the No. 3 doubles spot, Jade Pridgen-Michelle Giron battled Emma Cobb-Isabella Spruill into a pro-set tiebreaker before falling 7-5.
On the showcase singles court, Vester defeated Lawrence Academy’s Chloe Watson 6-4, 6-0 while at No. 6, Dinardo stopped Isabella Spruill 6-4, 7-6. The 1-A Tarheel Independent Conference Warriors then won four of the six singles titles to secure the outcome.
“After going down 2-1 in doubles it was tough for our young team to make the comeback in singles, but I thought they battled really well,” Greenfield coach Robert Cunningham said. “No one gave up on their match even if they were way down. We play Lawrence two more times this season so it will be a good measuring stick for us to see how much we have improved.”
Greenfield plays host to Northeast Carolina Prep on Wednesday.
