VCA 10-run inning dooms WCA
FAYETTEVILLE — The Wilson Christian Academy softball team was up 4-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning on Wednesday on the road against Village Christian Academy.
But then the wheels fell off as VCA scored 10 runs and the Lady Chargers only got three of them back in the seventh in losing 12-7.
The non-league loss, the last regular-season game for WCA, dropped it to 9-7.
“We were able to escape the fourth with giving up only one unearned run after making two errors, but we want as fortunate in the fifth inning,” WCA head coach Mike Renfrow said. “We had two costly errors that led to 10 runs and five of those were unearned. I really thought we hit the ball well against a pretty good pitcher, and Kristen (Raper) pitched good enough to win. We beat ourselves.”
Raper took the loss, going six innings. She gave up nine runs, but only three were earned. She strick out nine and walked three.
At the plate, McKenna Griffin was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. McKenzie Robinson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, Sarah Carr was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Christy Jones was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Up next for WCA will be a North Carolina Christian Schools Athletic Association 2-A playoff quarterfinal game at home against Cramerton Christian at 7 p.m. on May 8.
